Syrian bread is a staple in my household. It's versatile and goes well with almost anything. I have a foolproof recipe that is always a hit among my family and friends. Here's how you can make Syrian bread that is soft, chewy and delicious.

Ingredients

To make this Syrian bread, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon white granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Tools

For this recipe, you will need:

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer or stand mixer (optional)
  • Bread knife or pizza cutter
  • Baking sheet

How to Make Syrian Bread

This recipe makes around 6 large loaves of Syrian bread.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Make a well in the center of the mixture and add in warm water and olive oil.
  3. Mix until you form a smooth, elastic dough. If you're using an electric mixer or stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment and mix on medium speed for 5-6 minutes.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp towel and leave it to rest in a warm place for 45-60 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide into 6 equal portions.
  6. On a floured surface, roll out each portion of dough into a circular shape, around 6-8 inches in diameter and about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Place each piece of dough onto a baking sheet and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  9. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, make diagonal cuts onto the surface of each piece of dough, making sure not to cut all the way through.
  10. Bake the Syrian bread for 12-15 minutes, or until it's golden brown and slightly puffed up. You can also bake it for a longer amount of time if you prefer a crispy texture.
  11. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
  12. Serve and enjoy!

Tips

  • Make sure your water is warm, but not too hot. Hot water can kill the yeast and your dough won't rise properly.
  • If you're using an electric mixer or stand mixer, start on low speed and gradually increase it to prevent the dough from flying out of the bowl.
  • You can also brush some olive oil on top of the Syrian bread after it's done baking, to give it a glossy finish.

Note

This recipe can be easily customized to your liking. You can add herbs, spices, or cheese to the dough for added flavor. You can also make smaller or larger loaves, depending on your preference.
